In my previous posts you’ve probably read about the DWNTWN concert series, and free movie Wednesdays at the Wall Cast, but did you know that those were once just ideas?

These ideas, among many others have come to fruition thanks to the Knights Art Challenge. And now, it’s time to turn your idea into reality!

From Feb. 4 – Mar. 4, John S. and the James L. Knight Foundation will be accepting applications for a Miami-based community contest funding cultural projects that will grow the arts scene and engage/enrich our community experience.

Think you’ve got a good idea? Give it a shot!  Applications are open to the public.

Only three simple rules. All projects must:
1. Include the arts
2. Take place in South Florida or benefit South Florida
3. Match Knight’s funding (If your idea is chosen you receive a grant, but you find other funds to match theirs.)

“We’re looking for the best ideas – truly Miami ideas – that help bring art to our neighborhoods and make culture ubiquitous in South Florida,” said Dennis Scholl, Knight Foundation’s vice president/arts. “In a truly creative town like ours, we see the challenge as a chance for everybody to participate, to dream, and ultimately see their ideas through to reality.”

Still have a few questions you’d like addressed? Be sure to attend one of the community roundtable discussions listed below.

7 p.m. Feb. 18: Cinema Paradiso, Ft. Lauderdale, 503 SE 6th St, Fort Lauderdale
7 p.m. Feb. 19: Opa-locka City Hall, 780 Fisherman St., Second Floor
7 p.m. Feb. 20: Cannonball, Downtown Miami, 1035 N. Miami Ave., Suite 200
7 p.m., Feb. 21: South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center, 10950 SW 211 St.

Since 2008, the Knights Art Challenge has funded over 140 projects and spent close to $20 million, allowing our community to celebrate the arts and reach global recognition. So together, let’s continue this tradition and take initiative. (Who knows maybe I’ll team up with my artsy husband and submit an idea of our own.)

It’s always hard to predict whether the next Target high-fashion designer collaboration will be a hit or miss. But this upcoming Prabal Gurung for Target collab seems to be the talk of town.

And just in time for your Valentines Day outfit, Gurung’s designs are inspired by a woman’s journey through love. “One idea I kept coming back to was the idea of love; whether it’s having it, pining for it, losing it, wanting it…” commented Gurung.

The line which includes, handbags, shoes and jewelry, launches Feb. 10 and will be available at all Target stores and online till Mar. 23 (while supplies last.) Prices will range from $19.99 to $199.99 for apparel and $12.99 to $39.99 for shoes and accesories. But if you’ve got your eye on something, I suggest you pick a store and get there bright and early. As these flowery, vibrant, and fun pieces are sure to fly!

Not sure you’re up for the commotion? I don’t blame you. My advice is that you get online and shop from the comfort of your home, unless you’re like me and you actually enjoy trying things on and the rush of the shopping craze.

No te culpo! Mi consejo es que hagas tus comprars via internet, desde la comodidad de tu hogar, a menos que seas como yo y que realmente te guste ir de compras en medio de tanta locura.

Have you heard? It’s January and that means the color of the year is in full effect…

PANTONE® 17-5641 Emerald,” a lively, radiant, lush green,” is the 2013 Color of the Year.

Last year, it seemed like everywhere you looked you saw a shade of reddish-orange, better known as Tangerine Tango. Did you ever stop and wonder why?

It’s definitely no coincidence. Every year, Pantone the leading authority in color industry, carefully studies and selects the color of choice for the year.

How do they arrive to this conclusion? Pantone thoughtfully and thoroughly observes color influences all across the world and across industries.  Whether it’s art, pop culture, sports, entertainment, fashion, film and even socio-economic conditions, Pantone takes note of the current color capturing the world’s attention and labels it the “Color of The Year.”  This decision then defines and influences product development all across the board.

Most often the color associated with the precious gemstone can be seen in nature and has been known to symbolize growth and harmony.

Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute® commented, “…Emerald continues to sparkle and fascinate. Symbolically, Emerald brings a sense of clarity, renewal and rejuvenation, which is so important in today’s complex world. This powerful and universally appealing tone translates easily to both fashion and home interiors.”

What do you think? Will you be incorporating this color in your wardrobe or home?

¿Has oído?

¿Te has preguntado por qué?

THE BEST PHO YOU!

Don’t worry, I haven’t totally lost my grammar skills, nor did I begin to write slang…

Pho (pronounced “fuh”) is a delicious “street-style” Vietnamese soup made up of meat and broth (chicken or beef), rice noodles, and savory spices. This soup is usually topped with fresh bean sprouts, basil, mint, and a hint of lime.

So, why exactly am I ranting about Pho?

Well, one, because it’s delicious… And two, because it’s great for chasing away those unwanted winter flu bugs going around.

I know, I know, abuela taught you to eat your “sopita de pollo cuando tienes catarro o estas resfriado,” but if you’re too sick to cook… I suggest you try out this alternative soup. Pho is hearty, healthy and scrumptious; and after today you’ll know my favorite and the best Pho restaurants in Miami.

Ready to place your order and say goodbye to the flu? Here are a few tips before you begin…

  1. Be sure to spice up your broth. The restaurant should bring you a separate plate with sprouts, mint and lime. Add it all!
  2. Taste it to perfection. Once you’re done adding the herbs and veggies, be sure to also add a little bit of Sriracha (red chili pepper sauce) and Hoisin sauce (black plum sauce.) Taste it as you go along, that’s half the fun.
  3. Last but not least, use a fork to help you eat the delicious hearty meats and noodles, but don’t forget to sip the wonderful broth in between bites.

Mmmm, now I’m hungry. Enjoy your Pho!

POST HOLIDAY WORKOUT

We’ve officially made it through Thanksgiving and Christmas, now to face New Year’s Eve…

Perhaps, you’re like me and you’ve given yourself the gift of indulgence during this holiday season. Don’t worry no one is judging, enjoying the holidays with family, friends and delicious food is a must!

But now, it’s time to get back into learning/practicing healthy habits.

Exercising and eating healthy shouldn’t just be resolutions you make, they should be daily practices.

So here are a few things you can do to melt away those holiday pounds and boost-up your metabolism:

Post Holiday Tips

  1. Drink more water. Replacing juices/sodas for water is probably one of the easiest ways to shed those extra inches. It’s pretty simple:
    Soda = Processed Sugar
    Processed Sugar = Carbohydrates
    Carbohydrates = Slower Metabolism
    Slower Metabolism = Weight Gain
  2. Eat breakfast daily. Just like your car needs gasoline to start running, your body needs fuel to get your metabolism going. A healthy breakfast can consist of a fruit, Greek yogurt, or egg whites with whole wheat toast.
  3. Simplify and shop the perimeter. Don’t go crazy and start a new complicated diet that requires you to count calories or measure portions. Simplify, focus on eating more fruits/greens and learn to shop for groceries around the perimeters. (Avoid isles as they usually contain processed foods.)
  4. Replace whites with browns. Replace white rice, white pasta, and white bread with brown rice, whole wheat pasta, and whole wheat bread. This will increase you fiber content, and minerals/vitamin intake.
  5. Set a goal. Whether it’s walking,  jogging, dancing or playing a sport, spend at least 20 minutes a day doing some type of cardiovascular activity. And if you’re feeling up to a challenge, get started today with our post holiday workout.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

After yet another fun-filled week at Art Basel, I’ve come to realize that fashion, like art, is what you make of it.

There are two options:

  1. You can choose to follow trends/play it safe and wear high-end name brands and call your self “in style or trendy.”
  2. Or, you can wear whatever your heart desires (name or no name, in style or not) and wear it with confidence and actually make a statement! That my friends, is what this post is all about, outside of the box fashion.

Oh, and I won’t be telling you who or what they’re wearing, but rather why…

So, here are some cool kids and some cool kicks…

Art Basel Outfit Posts

Meet Milcho, aka Veronica Milchonera. Milcho was not only an artist showcased at Scope, she’s also a talented director, producer, and now a local with flair.

Her outfit is inspired by originality and a different perspective. Much like her art work called Domingo Familiar, (the mannequin pictured on the left) which is meant to portray a lack of parental control in our society. As you take a look into the peep-hole you’ll see a family watching television and their TV reflects your face peeping through a booty. Hmm, needless to say, it was an interesting perspective…

Art Basel Outfit Posts1

This gentleman’s name is Hoke. I spotted Hoke browsing through some art and found his look to be very original.

When I asked him what inspired his look he said, “Comfort! I actually didn’t know what to wear and I got this out of my giveaway pile.”

Well, glad you kept it, Hoke, your confidence and accessories totally put together a look like no other.

Art Basel Outfit Posts2

Check out Wendi Hill’s kicks! Not only is Wendi totally rocking the wedged sneaker trend, but the color-blocking and brightness takes the trend to a whole new level. Wendi’s look is inspired by “being green,” in both aspects of the word, the color and the eco-friendliness.

Art Basel Outfit Posts3

Now, I know these aren’t considered “kicks”. And don’t worry, no one was actually walking in them… (Maybe because they’re not on sale.)

But how could I resist posting these crazy shoes? This unique work of art was created by a self-taught artist from San Francisco by the name of Scott Hove. M. S Hove’s Cakeland concept began in 2005, and this specific creation is called Self Objectification Strategy.

What inspired him? A desire to experiment with mixed media and “an obsession with the relationship between the beautiful and the brutal.”

Art Basel Outfit Posts4

Did someone say men can’t wear wedges?

Kazuki Takamatsu, an artist from Sendai, Japan wore wedges with absolutely no fear. He hardly spoke English, so it was quite a challenge to figure out what his inspiration was. But he gladly took a picture standing in front of his work… and from what I could gather, his affinity for black and white goes far beyond his paintings.

Art Basel Outfit Posts6

Last but not least, on my way out I ran into this very cool-looking couple. Their look was inspired by a vintage feel and a mix of colors and patters.

So you see, fashion is definitely a form of art. It takes not only talent but also bravery and confidence to wear what you want to wear and make it work! You don’t necessarily need tons of money, just creativity and a new perspective. So remember, wear what makes you happy and wear it well. ;)
