TIARAS THE BALL EVENT

Last week, I volunteered at a Summer camp called Camp Wake. I spent an entire week with middle and high-school students. During my time there, I was reminded how important it is to invest in the lives of teens. While most of our time at camp was spent making up cheers, having fun and competing. We also got to hear a camp speaker, and after every talk one of our girls approached a leader to share and pray about a dark situation they were facing. These teenage girls were dealing with suicide attempts, death threats, emotional and even physical abuse. I was reminded how broken our world is, but I was also reminded of how BIG my GOD is. Though at first, I was saddened by each situation… I was also quickly reminded that God has a plan for each of them, and that this darkness would be no more. So today, I’d like to share with you about how someone else’s brokenness became a dream and a bright new future called TIARAS.

What is Tiaras? Share with us the vision and the dream?

Tiaras exists to Re-Write the statistics, one teenage girl at a time. The mission of Tiaras is to paint a picture of God’s perfect love to every teenage girl we encounter and Re-Writing the statistics of teen pregnancy, promiscuity and suicide. Through a revealing and relevant message based on 1 Corinthians 13, our mission is to let every teen girl know their completion comes from God alone and that they are Daughters of a King!

BALL EVENT

How did this dream come into fruition?

I, Lily Garcia, was speaking at a young woman’s conference in Ft.Lauderdale last year about our self worth & the way God sees us.  I had themed the night as “Princess Night” bringing crowns with me and pink royal touches not realizing God was about to birth a stirring within me called, TIARAS.

I’ve always felt drawn to younger women in this journey we call life. I grew up as not only a fatherless girl, but at age 19 learned I was the result of a violent act. My mom was date raped at age 21 and against all odds kept me. This truth marked my entire 20’s, I felt like I was an accident and I wasn’t supposed to be here. I went on to accept an unhealthy love story and gave myself to this relationship for over 10 years. Coming out of that unhealthy relationship awakened something in me to teach young girls & women, reminding them that they are beautifully and wonderfully made. That they have purpose and are God’s masterpiece, and that the love God intended for us to receive is defined clearly in 1 Corinthians 13.

The night I spoke, a mother of one of the college students attending the conference held my hand at the end of evening and said “I wish someone would have told me at a young age what you just told our daughters”. She wept. Confessed she was a statistic. Getting pregnant at 14 and having been in numerous abusive relationships, she had 5 children fathered by 5 different men. Her tears marked me and I asked God to help me find a way to create a pink box movement that will begin in America, but spread all over the world crowning girls from the US to Columbia, to Thailand and even huts in Africa, awakening the hearts of teen girls to the way God sees them!

How can our community help?
Our ball events are completely sponsor and volunteer driven, and they are completely free to all girls.  You can either sponsor a TiarasGirl that evening by donating $10 on www.thelegacyministries.com. This pays for her crown, the experience, and her Devotional on “Shining Like Royalty” written by TIARAS;  or by donating dresses of all styles and sizes. We provide a Dress Boutique at the events so that underprivileged girls could select a free dress and come in all her splendor. (Miami donations can be dropped off this week at Christ Journey Church, from 9-5pm, email Vannia for more info.)

Who is it geared toward, and how can we be a part of it?

We gear our Ball events towards pre-teen, teens and young college girls. US statistics say that the average girl is giving away her purity at age 14. The US also leads the world with the highest rate of teen pregnancy, and the 3rd highest cause of death among our teens today is suicide. Therefore, our desire is to get to them as early as we can. How can you be a part of it? Bring your teen to the next event. Or volunteer at an upcoming ball, register at www.thelegacyministries.com as there are volunteer opportunities before, during and after the ball events. We also partner with volunteers in the Arts for all the artistic elements during the Ball experience, actors, photographers, dancers, and lay people wanting to make a difference. (*all volunteers subject to a background check)

As I mentioned in our Bikini Invasion post, this year’s Swim week was a little more special than the last… Flair Miami gals were invited to a plethora of events, and as much as we wanted to cover them all, we simply couldn’t… But with a little help from our friends, we kinda did. ;)

PriscillaB takes Miami, woos the audience and debuts her collection. Her line, Appunti Di Viaggio, (and yes you guessed it it’s 100% Italian) was showcased at Wall inside the W hotel. PriscillaB’s bold prints, and embellished accents, had the audience dancing and ready to hit the beach.

Here’s a play by play of the show… There were 5 girls and 3 platforms in the venue; the collection, which she described as a coastal voyage was made up of two lines: Black Label and White Label.

Black Label featured bold prints and jeweled accents.IMG_2548

While the White Label, took a minimalist approach.
White Label

The show wasn’t your average runway show, the models danced to Blurred Lines. Priscilla, came out to the sounds of Crazy In Love, and we all know you can’t help but dance to Beyoncé. and she danced indeed!

Last but not least, the girls came out with silk capes! Okay, maybe they were cover-ups that looked like capes ;).

Most of her line was made out of lycra, except for the last set of bathing suits, they were pure silk; and her adorable cover-ups were made with comfy cotton. Oh, and did I mention that all her suits are also available in youth sizes. So, those of you with little sisters or cousins who want to match, she’s got you covered!

I was able to pull Priscilla aside for a few minutes, only to realize she may be one of the most stunning people I’ve met, also a down-to-earth welcoming woman.

Ready to experience the magic for yourself?

As swim week came to a close, and the rush of it all began to sink in, I wasn’t sure where to start. Being my first Swim Week, I am proud to say it was a success. Not only were the shows and parties fashion perfection, but the simple fact that Flair Miami was featured at the Escape Miami Style Lounge was enough to make it the best yet (who knows what’s to come for next year’s swim week ;) )

This year, we were fortunate enough to have a chat with some of our favorite designers, one of them was Monica Wise, the creative director and lead designer behind L*Space.

What was your inspiration for the 2014 line?

This year’s collection is inspired by the girl that wants to travel and get away.  It’s about packing different looks and learning how to pack lightly while still having a lot of looks to choose from. In this collection, I did a lot of mix and matching and a lot of reversible pieces, I wanted to make it easier to take fewer suits on a trip.

Tell us about some of the looks that we saw on the runway.

We had a few stylists from NYC incorporate hats used by Nicki Minaj. And the jewelry you saw were some of Cher’s personal pieces. Oh, and something else that was also unique about our show is that we streamed it live from www.everythingbutwater.com so people from all around the world could tune in to see the 2014 collection.

LSPACE SWIM

Tell our Flair Miami readers something they may not know about you.

Well, I’ve been doing this for about 13 years and I am an original Florida girl! I started in Florida and later on moved to California.

Monica Wise is not only extremely talented, she was also very sweet.  Her swimwear and resort collection blended in several trends beautifully, showcasing the sophisticated pastel color palates along with the classic black and whites. Designer Monica Wise, also incorporated Aztec prints, geometric shapes, snakeskin, watercolor and old-world Caribbean and galactic map patterns that completed the overall look and theme.

Can’t wait to see what she will come up with next!

Missed the show? Here’s a look, thanks to our friends at Mercedes Benz.

Wednesday July 18, the Flair interns got to attend one of our favorite Funkshion Swim Week events yet, the Emerging Designers Fashion show sponsored by Peroni. The show presented the collections of young aspiring fashion designers from Miami International University of Arts and Design. The contestants competed for the title of Peroni Top Emerging Designer. For the challenge, the designers had to create a collection with their interpretation of Italian style.

Hosted in the SLS, the models strutted a series of romantic handcrafted pieces in an intimate pool area setting. As each collection made their way down the catwalk, I like others wondered how only one designer could be picked. The caliber of artistry and talent that night was overwhelming!

There was one collection however, that stood above the rest. In a series of complex geometric and structural hand-sewn garments, the Quyen Dimension line wowed the audience with its effortlessly Italian avant-grade look. The proud designer of the collection? Kim-Quyen Nguyen!

We got a chance to chat with this very sweet fashion prodigy:

Tell us a little bit about yourself?

I am 21 years old. Born in Boston and lived in St. Petersburg. I’ve always wanted to have my own fashion line it’s every girls dream to make a name for herself!

What was a common theme in your collection?

Structural geometric shapes.  I wanted to create a collection that had body and different looks.

What was the inspiration behind the Quyen Dimension line?

My main inspiration behind the structural construction of my line where flower petals. If you look at a flower from one angle it’s different then if you look at it from the top or the side. I wanted my collection to have the same illusion by using shapes.

Who are you most excited to see at NYC Fashion week?

Anyone from Hong Kong. They are all  my inspiration!

Who are your designs geared for?

People that want to stand out and don’t care what they look like as long as they’re making a statement.

Kim is not only a gifted designer, but also a down-to-earth girl with many talents! Her young spirit and visionary ways inspired us! We wish her all the best in her future fashion endeavors. And I have a good feeling that this won’t be the last time we see her work strut down the catwalk ;)

hello

What will you be wearing at this years Swim Week?

Last week, I (Giselle) went on a mini-getaway to one of my favorite places in the United States…Manhattan.  Between the fabulous shopping, Broadway shows, delicious New York pizza and the fast paced city life, I loved it all.

First stop: SHOPPING.  I spent one full day on Fifth Avenue and one full day in SoHo.  But, let’s be real.  I spent a full day window shopping on Fifth Avenue, and a full day blowing all my money in SoHo.  Between LF Boutique and Brandy Melville I was in heaven. PS. I just learned that there is also an LF Boutique located on Miami Beach! Woohoo! Anyway, I left both spots with lots of goodies, probably more than I should have.

Next stop: BROADWAY. When I tell you that the main reason I went to New York was for a specific broadway show, you may not believe me.  But, a couple of months back, I saw that Matilda was on Broadway and I was beyond excited.  Matilda was my favorite childhood story, and I knew I had to see the musical! How could I miss it?  So, a couple of months later, there I was in New York City at the Shubert Theatre reliving my memory of Miss Trunchbull and the chokey.

Last Stop: FOOD. Those who know me know that I love food. Yes, I love to eat, & I knew I could not leave New York with out having some authentic New York style pizza.  So I am telling you about this next place because if you are ever in the Big Apple you must try them out! John’s Pizzeria (not to be confused with Papa John’s) has two locations, one in Jersey and one in the heart of Times Square. This is definitely the place to go for authentic New York style pizza.  Oh, and it doesn’t hurt that the restaurant is located in what was once the Gospel Tabernacle Church built in the 1800’s. They kept all the original architecture from that time, so you get to enjoy your pizza while time traveling back a couple hundred years.

I wasn’t kidding when I said Manhattan was one of my favorite places in the US, there’s always something to do and there is always people to see.

I don’t know how many times I have driven past Tap Tap Haitian Restaurant on South Beach and 5th Street and thought to myself  “I should check it out someday.” After living on the beach for a month, I finally stopped thinking about going and actually went! Now, here’s my attempt to convince you to do the same… It’s delicious!

Tap Tap is a South Beach hidden gem, raved about by all the locals as one of the best Haitian cuisines in town. Here you can expect Haitian flair to come alive as the colors of the murals, decor and vibrant people immerse you in their tropical culture.

Seated in one of their variously themed rooms, I enjoyed my complimentary appetizer of fresh bread with a selection of mild to spicy sauces. The foods listed on the menu are authentic and delicious, but if there is something you don’t recognize, it’s in your best interest to keep an open mind. I had the Cabrit or goat stew, which was a first for me, but so worth it! Another tasty dish I would recommend is the Griot plate, a win for any beef lover. But, if there is one thing that you cannot leave this place without having it’s one of their killer Mojitos. Awarded “Best Mojito” by The New Times, their combination of fresh mint leaves, rum and lime juice is for lack of a better word, perfection.

So, now that the secret is out, how could you not try the best mojitos in town? Maybe next time you’re in the area, you too can stop by and explore this new flavorful experience!

It all started at the age of 12, Adrianne Calvo, decided to experiment by making chocolate chip cookies. Everyone her age already seemed to enjoy eating them, but she was determined to find a way to make her cookies taste even better.

From that day on, Adriane was inspired to experiment in the kitchen. Whether it was baking or cooking, she loved how it made her feel and how creative she could be.  But her drive and love for cooking didn’t just end in her kitchen…

Throughout the years, Adriane participated in culinary competitions for scholarships, money, trips, etc. and her competitive spirit always seemed to have her on-the-hunt for something new. Hence, at the age of 20, she won a competition that led her to Napa Valley and changed her perspective on food and wine forever.

“Traveling through Napa Valley, I fell in love with the food, the wine, the atmosphere, and everything in between. A couple years later, stepping into what is now Chef Adrianne’s Vineyard Restaurant and Wine Bar, I knew immediately that what I fell in love with in that famous wine growing region could happen here. It would not be an easy task, but after an enormous amount of effort, imagination, and recipe testing, we now have Chef Adrianne’s Vineyard Restaurant and Wine Bar,” said Adriane.

With the income of her book sales (yet another competition she entered and won), she opened her first restaurant here in Miami, and the FlairMiami gals had the opportunity to taste some of her personal favorite dishes from the restaurant at the Italian Culinary Experience.

  • The appetizer, raw tuna with ponzu aioli, truffle, radishes and a few jalapeños. The dish was the perfect starter, it was light with a tiny hint of spice – perfect combination.
  • Our next dish was sweet potato bisque topped with chorizo and tortilla chips.  This had to be one of my favorite dishes of the night.  The taste of the bisque was not only amazing, but the tortilla chips and the chorizo topped it off perfectly.
  • Next, we tried a crispy goat cheese, fig marmalade, jamon Serrano and balsamic croquet.  When I tell you I’ve never tasted anything like this dish, I mean it.
  • Our main course was a 24-hour-braised prime beef short rib, paired with whipped boniato puree, and crispy kale. The pairing was by far one of the best short rib dishes I have ever tried.
  • We ended our experience with a dark chocolate Nutella croissant bread pudding and vanilla bean gelato.  Chocolate lovers, if you’re anything like me, you’d fall in love with this dish. It was the perfect ending to one of the best culinary experiences yet.

Salivating? Be sure to check out her restaurant located at 11510 SW 147 Avenue – Miami, Fl 33196. For reservations, contact (305) 408-8386.

Thank you Chef Adrianne for a wonderful experience, and a special thanks to Zonin Prosecco for  yet another successful Italian Culinary Experience and of course delicious wine pairings.
