Following Fall trends in Miami always gets a little tricky. Not only does the weather not lend itself to fun trendy sweaters, but even shopping becomes a mission when you’re trying to find items at an affordable price.

Lucky for you, we’re making things a little easier… Now, you too can be “spotted” wearing polka dot flair, and still have some money to spare. ;)

Here are a few spot on trends for Fall 2012:

  1. STEAL: Old Navy Sweater $24.95 (sold out)
  2. SPLURGE:  Alice + Olivia Sweater $297
  3. STEAL:  Asos Platforms $43
  4. SPLURGE: Loaffler Randall Pumps $350
  5. STEAL: Madewell Flats  $98
  6. SPLURGE: Loaffler Randall Flats $320
  7. STEAL: Asos Scarf $17
  8. SPLURGE: Kate Spade Scarf $98

I love polka dots. They’re feminine, classy, and also very easy to mix and match. For a simple and classic look, pair the print with a solid neutral piece and add bold (red) lips. For a more modern/runway look, mix and match with other prints (floral or leopard). How will you wear them this Fall? Have fun and get creative!

Have you seen the latest trend in hair flair? Allow me to introduce to you the stylish satin elastic hair ties.

Not only do they prevent those annoying ponytail creases and tears, but they also look just as cute when worn on your wrist. Not sure where to find them? You can snag some at a few high-end retail stores, but they’ll cost you upwards of $2 each. Original creators, Emi-Jay, sell them for about $2.40 each, and even popular clothing stores are starting to stock their shelves.

For a limited time, Flair Miami is partnering with our friend Hana Espinosa to give you inside access to this new trend at a bargain price. Not sold yet? What if I told you your purchase would be going directly towards helping a family adopt a precious little child from China. Hana’s sister, Katie is in the process of adopting a special-needs child from an orphanage in China. Katie is once again following God’s prompting to adopt and clings to James 1:27 as it says, “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.”

Every penny spent on these hairties will go directly towards Katie and her family’s adoption process. How can a $1 hairtie make that much of a difference? Your purchase can help chip away the costs of medical procedures, travel arrangements, and food. Your purchase will make a difference. A palpable difference. One child’s life will be forever changed – brought out of an orphanage where he/she is just another child left behind and carried to a forever family who will love and nurture him/her as one of their own.

Interested in getting your hands on these trendy hair ties while making a difference in someone’s life? We currently offer 14 different color options of the satin-handmade ties. Each are sold separately for a limited time price of $1 each.  All satin colors are also available as headbands for $4 each, but remember supplies are limited. Be sure to place your orders soon.  (Two glitter options are also available: hairties $2, headbands $6.)

If your hair is anything like mine, I’m more than certain that you’ve had your share of bad hair days. Maybe you brushed your curls out because you didn’t know any better; or you lathered it with more than a handful of good ol’ (and by good I mean gross) LA Looks gel. Didn’t we all? All the cool kids were doing it back in the 90’s…

Or perhaps you thought your curly girl problems were solved the day you discovered a blow dryer and/or a hair iron. Think again! After years and years of fighting my curls, I’ve not only learned to work with them, now I embrace them and even love them.

Still not sure how to tame that mane? Here’s a quick guide on how to style curly hair…

  1. I hydrate my curls by using only sulfate and silicone free products. My current favorite is DevaCurl. I’ve tried quite a few, but I’ve stuck with this one the longest. I cleanse my hair with their No-Poo Shampoo. I moisturize with the One Conditioner, and style with the Angel Gel and Set It Free.
  2. I never use a brush or a comb, and when I say never I mean it! I only untangle my hair by running my fingers through it with conditioner and in the shower.
  3. I only use alcohol-free gels. All other gels will dry out your curls causing them to friz even more.
  4. I wash my hair with shampoo only twice a week, every other time I only use conditioner. Your curls need all of their natural oils to maintain and enhance the curl in each strand. This habit may be the hardest to change, but I encourage you to give it a try! Click here to buy a DevaCurl Try Me/Travel Kit.
  5. Last but not least, before styling and in order to prevent friz I dry my hair using a microfiber towel. The most important thing is to not use a terrycloth towel, it absorbs all the moisture that your curls need. Instead of wrapping my hair I flip my head forward and I scrunch with an upward motion.
  6. Once the hair is towel dried I begin styling with the products in the same manner.
  7. After I’ve styled my curls I let them air dry and voila!

In case you haven’t heard, Mercedez Benz Fashion Week – Swim, Funkshion, and Summer Splash came and went.

After a week filled with fashion, fun, and fabulous weather; Miami is left with great beaches and beautiful people that get to rock bikinis all year long. Woo hoo! (Sorry New York folks, that’s about the only thing we have that you don’t – great weather.)

I don’t know about you, but after seeing this year’s new trends in swimwear and even some old fashioned styles making a comeback (high-waist bottoms and the pin-up 50’s look) I can’t wait to hit the beach in a new bikini and a matching trendy cover-up.

So, what were some of the prominent trends? I’d say there was a blend of femininity with a little bit of bold colored fun. From crochet tops, bottoms with ruffles, fringes, and prints, the collections were suited for all shapes and sizes.

Here are some shots from the new upcoming trends:

Over 50 designers showcased their 2013 swim and resort designs from well known international names (Chloe, Mara Hoffman, L*SPACE, Luli Fama, Red Carter, and Dolores Cortes) to up-and-coming local designers.

Miami housed thousands of enthused fashion lovers ready to take a look at this year’s new fashion. Among those in attendance were hundreds of local and national fashion bloggers. And after a long week of work, Bloggers Night Out held a special soirée and their very first BNO event in Miami; it was a twilight rooftop party at the Betsy Hotel filled with cocktails, massages, and great giveaways specifically held for the community of fashion bloggers.

(I won a Stephanie Johnson bag in the raffle ;)) Image Source for BNO: Plastics Make It Possible & BNO

Looks like Miami’s fashion and blogging community is ready to network and make a statement! Maybe one day we’ll host a fashion week that’s not swim related. Till then… Thanks to all who made this possible.

Here’s what you’ll need:
Bleach
Chalk
Gloves
Ruler
Tweezers
Sand paper
Fabric scissors
Laundry detergent
Large bowl or bucket
X-acto precision knife
Old denim jeans (avoid using spandex or stretchy jeans)
And a buffing nail block (suggested to help the fraying process)

Now we’re ready to recycle those old jeans into some awesome trendy shorts!

Directions:

  1. First things first, let’s figure out the length of your new shorts. Draw a line across your jeans with chalk, this will be where you’ll begin to cut. A good rule of thumb to follow is to cut a little longer than you think and trim later, also use a ruler and measure the length starting from the center/tipped crotch area – measure down: 1 inch = very short shorts, 4 inches is about upper thigh and 6 inches tends to be longer shorts. You can also try on the jeans and mark your desired length. (I personally  didn’t want them super short, so I measured 4 inches from the center crotch area and drew my straight line. As opposed to a rounded circled cut – shorter on the sides.)
  2. Now you’re ready to cut along your line with fabric scissors. If you have good enough scissors you may cut both legs at the same time. If in doubt, cut one leg at a time, then place the cut leg on top of the uncut one and use it as a guide.
  3. Fill bowl with bleach.

The amount of bleach depends on the size of the container you use. After the bowl or bucket is filled with bleach, submerge your shorts in the bleach for about 20-30 minutes. Add more bleach as needed.

(Obviously, the section you decide to dip will be the area that will lighten. Play with it and feel free to get creative!)

Please note: Some shorts may need to remain dipped in bleach for either a shorter or longer period of time. The thickness and color of the denim is an important factor in this process. Be sure to stand by and watch the color change. This will allow you to decide when the shorts have reached your desired color. If you dipped the bottom part of the shorts and you’d like to achieve an ombre effect (graduated decrease in tone or color), dip the opposite portion of the shorts for half of the time. The longer you leave them submerged, the lighter they’ll be. (I dipped one entire side, because I wanted the entire shorts to have a washed out lighter tone.)

  4. Remove shorts from bowl/bucket. Run water through the shorts trying to remove as much of the bleach as possible. Do this for at least 5-10 minutes to prevent further change in color.
  5. After you’ve completely rinsed the bleach, place shorts in the washing machine. Add some laundry detergent and run a short cycle. Once the cycle is finished, proceed to place the shorts in the dryer.
  6. Remove the shorts from the dryer, and now we’re ready to begin the fraying process.

Fraying and distressing shorts:

  1. Wrap the rough finished sandpaper around a nail buffing block.
  2. Place the edges of the shorts on either a box or a rough surface. I used the edge of my outdoor stairs. Begin sanding the shorts until you reach your desired frayed look.
  3. Using the tweezers begin to pick the white threads and pulling them toward you. Do this in each leg and all the way around.
  4. To give the shorts a more rugged look, decide where you’d like to add a hole and cut the line using your X-acto.

Flip the shorts inside out, so that you can see the white threads easier. Begin pulling the threads toward the center of the hole. Be sure to not rip these threads to create the following look.
And you’re done. Viola! The more you wash them, the better they’ll look.

I got a little more creative and added studs to my shorts. :) There you have it, my first DIY (do it yourself) blog post. Enjoy!
