I can officially say that I am finished with my Junior year of college! Bring on the senioritis! Anyway, my finals week was one of the most hectic weeks, and so I wanted to end the week right.  What better way to end it than with an intense yoga class taught by one of the most inspiring yoga teachers I know?

My yoga adventure began this past Sunday evening with two of my close friends. We heard Yoga Girl Rachel Brathen was going to be in town doing yoga workshops all over Miami, and we were on it in a heartbeat! We signed up for an “All You Can Handstand Class” and boy did they mean it when they said All You Can Handstand.

Rachel Brathen is a Swedish native living in Aruba where she teaches yoga at Manchebo Beach Resort and Spa.  Her yoga classes are a mix of Hatha and Vinyasa flow while incorporating breathing techniques, creative sequencing, and core work. Her goal for each class is to energize the body, cultivate a meditative consciousness, and give greater vitality and health. And I must say, her class did just that!

With the help of  Om’Echaye Wellness and Fitness Center and Love and Vegetables  vegetarian and vegan restaurant I definitely felt energized! Rachel is so talented, and inspiring, and I am so happy I was able to be taught by her.

The All You Can Yoga community brought us together.  People from different parts of town were there because of this one thing that we all have in common, a love for YOGA!

A few weeks back at Miami International Fashion Week, I signed up for a Rimmel London modeling contest. I honestly only signed up because I was asked to do so, and I was getting free goodies :) But, the thought that I’d even come close to winning didn’t even cross my mind.

Anyway, about a week ago I got an email that I was selected as one of the top 20 semi-finalists. I was (and still am) very flattered that I was chosen to move forward in this nation-wide contest!

As one of the the top 20 finalists, I was asked to send in a few extra head shots. Well, Vannia and I had a mini-photo-shoot to get a few different shots to send to the judges. Not only is Vannia a great writer and a fashionista, but I also learned that she’s a pretty good photographer! I wonder what else she’ll pull out of her sleeve! ;)

Wavy hair, straight hair, and loads of make-up later…we chose these shots to send in.  I’d thought it’d be fun to share them with you, so here they are!

flairmiami

No matter what happens, all of this has been a blast; and I’m proud to say that little ‘ol 5’1 me was chosen as a semi-finalist in a modeling contest. (Okay, okay it’s not runway modeling but still!)

Did I forget to mention the PRIZE?! The top 3 finalist will be flown to New York City where they will meet the Rimmel London Team and Storm Model Management. From there the grand prize winner will be chosen, and that lucky gal will get a $30,000 year contract with Rimmel London.

YES I JUST SAID $30,000 YEAR CONTRACT (that’s a lifetimes worth of money for a college girl).

So, all I can ask YOU to do is to keep your fingers crossed! I’ll keep you posted with the results.

May the best “model” win! :)

GRABIT ROBOT

Trinkits Design, a West Palm Beach design company dedicated to creating products that combine “functionality and timeless artistic design” launch a crowd-funding Kickstarter campaign to kick off their first product, the Grabit Robot!

Allow me to introduce to you Angie and Leo Fajardo… (By the way, Angie is my awesome older sister and Leo is my creative brother-in-law. ;))

Leo and Angie Fajardo are the faces behind Grabit Robot. Their design concept stemmed from a lack of existing tooth brush holders that fit their needs and style, but now they need YOUR help as they seek to reach their $7,000 goal. Once this goal is reached, this amount will go toward the production and shipping of their project. Your pledge will allow Gabrit Robot to come to full fruition.

“Kickstarter is a great vehicle for young entrepreneurs like us.  Crowd funding is a revolutionary way of branding and funding for start-ups,” said Angie Fajardo.

Kickstarter is an online funding platform that allows creative projects to come to life. Many film-makers, artists, designers, and musicians have fully funded and launched their product with the help of individuals like you. This all-or-nothing approach means that if the project falls no one is charged. But if the project reaches its goal, as over 35,000 projects have, you as a funding pledge get rewards and perks.

Now, Grabit Robot needs your help! This multi-purpose modern holder is a work of art made of durable plastic, standing at 5 inches tall.
Grabit

Grabit is sure to make a great companion for all!  It can serve as a bathroom friend for kids and grown-ups, and even a desk companion in the office. Grabit will keep things tidy and add a little fun & flair to a dull environment.

There are only a few days to go! Will you be a founding contributor and own your very own Grabit Robot?

When opportunity knocks, answer the door! So when I was given the opportunity to write a piece on local producer, director, and writer, Brad Bernstein, I got right to it.  With the Miami International Film Festival going on this week, I couldn’t be more excited to speak with Brad and discuss his documentary, Far Out Isn’t Far Enough: The Tomi Ungerer Story which is currently in the running for MIFF’s Knight Documentary Competition.

Brad, a Miami-based filmmaker, is co founder of Corner of the Cave Media which was founded in Miami’s Art and Design District.  He has been working on documentaries for over fifteen years, and is currently a writer for VH1’s Emmy Award Winning documentary series Behind the Music.  He was also supervising producer for Animal Planet’s documentary series Saved, and Coordinating producer for ESPN’s  documentary series, Rites of Autumn: The Story of College Football.

brad

Far Out Isn’t Far Enough: The Tomi Ungerer Story, one of Brad’s most recent productions,  has played at Toronto, DocNY, Palm Springs, Haifa, Warsaw film festivals, and will now be playing at the Miami International Film Festival 2013.

Depicting Tomi’s life long personal and artistic journey Far Out Isn’t Far Enough: The Tomi Ungerer Story, is filled with inspiration and creativity and offers a “feature-length retrospective of Ungerer’s life and art, pondering the complexities and contradictions of a man who, armed with an acerbic wit, an accusing finger and a razor sharp pencil, gave visual representation to the revolutionary voices during one of the most tantalizing and dramatic periods in American history.(http://www.faroutthemovie.com/)”

Well, I was able to speak one on one with Brad himself, and he gave our Flair Miami readers a look at who he is, and what to expect from the film:

What was your favorite part about working with Tomi Ungerer and why?

“Tomi is such a character. You don’t know whether he is being perverse or blasphemous, but whatever he says is interesting.  You never know what you’re going to get, but you know you’re going to be entertained.”

bradFar Out Isn't Far Enough4

As producer, screenwriter, and director, what message did you want the documentary to portray?

“It was really Tomi’s own story and words and we really wanted to make sure Tomi got the chance to express himself.  There was no preconceived notion… the film wrote itself as we were putting it together, and the unintended message is about finding your sense of identity.  A lot of people go throughout life not really knowing who they are, where they are from, or where they belong, and for Tomi, it took him 80 years to realize where he belongs.”

How do you perceive Tomi Ungerer?
“He is hyper-childish and hyper-intellectual all at the same time.  We’ve come to realize though, through many interviews, that a lot of children’s book authors and illustrators are very similar in that sense.”

Far Out Isn't Far Enough1Far Out Isn't Far Enough3

How long did it take to work on this production?

“It took us almost 4 years from the time that I learned about Tomi in an article that I read in the New York Times in 2008 to the production being featured at the Toronto Film Festival in 2012. Those four years were a big learning curve for me and my team.”

Where do you find inspirations to make films?

“Well, our ideas come from newspapers and really just being in environments where ideas are present. We like to surround ourselves with groups of creative people who are willing to try new things and use different materials.”

What advice would you give to someone trying to make it in this industry?

“The days of film have changed.  Anyone who wants to get into television and film can do it.  It is easy to get your hands on a decent camera and software…if you have an idea and you are a driven individual, just go for it, create it, and get it out there.”

I personally loved the film.  There was never a dull moment, and Tomi’s creative abilities truly changed the path for children’s literature.  Although Tomi went through circumstances that many of us could not fathom, he still faced the challenge that  most of us face today, and that’s finding what we truly love and where we truly belong.  Tomi Ungerer’s story is inspiring and strangely relatable, and I think we can all find a little piece of Tomi in us.

Far Out Isn’t Far Enough: The Tomi Ungerer Story will be screening on March 6th at the Miami Beach Cinematheque and March 8th at the Regal South Beach Cinema and tickets can be purchased here.
